Today’s Key Scripture

“When He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.”

— Matthew 14:23

When we pray, we must come to the right place. Moses, like Jesus, understood this, for we read:

Moses took his tent and pitched it outside the camp, far from the camp, and called it the tabernacle of meeting. And it came to pass that everyone who sought the Lord went out to the tabernacle of meeting which was outside the camp…. And it came to pass, when Moses entered the tabernacle, that the pillar of cloud descended and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses…. So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. (Exodus 33:7, 9, 11)

Moses knew where to meet God! That is why his prayers were effective.

The Lord Jesus said, “When you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place” (Matthew 6:6). That doesn’t necessarily mean a physical closet or specific address, for you and I can experience that solitude and oneness with the Lord even in the midst of a crowd. Yet it is good to separate from the distractions of the world in order to come into God’s presence.

Moses entered into the tabernacle (Exodus 33:7), away from the multitudes. Likewise, our Lord Jesus often separated Himself from the crowds, for He understood that the right quiet location is often necessary for effective prayer.

A Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, I humbly come before You with a grateful heart. I praise You, knowing that everything good and perfect comes from You. I’m thankful that You meet me wherever I am—all alone or in a crowd—but I ask You to help me get away from the distractions of life so I can focus on You. You alone are worthy of my praise and thanksgiving. In Jesus’ name, amen.
